Rantglass - because that's how things are.

Way down this lane.

Now this is what we call a Really Awesome Lineup – it exemplifies the spirit of what indie music festivals should be like, particularly in this long forgotten and overlooked region of Southeast Asia. How many times have we had such carrots dangled in front of us, only to be let down time and again when things failed to fall into place? So yesterday’s piece of news did give me a bit of hope:

Laneway Festival, Singapore, 29 January 2011
Current lineup: !!!, Beach House, Deerhunter, Foals, Holy F***, Ladyhawke, The Temper Trap, Warpaint, Yeasayer.

Major like. I mean, there is Deerhunter! Damn. The band is one of my favourite new discoveries for the year: while I had indeed been fervently hoping to hear them play Helicopter live, I would never have imagined them ever considering setting foot in this far side of the world, but hey, here we are. Mr Cox, I know beggars cannot be choosers, but how about including a trip up the causeway too, please?

The downside to all this is that it takes place during the week of Chinese New Year. Trying to steal away during this busy week could prove difficult…

Oh well. May there be more exciting times ahead. Perhaps grinning boyband heartthrobs, exhausted longtime classics, annoying pop supergroups and starry-eyed newcomers will not be the only ones we keep getting here.

And now, thanks to this, I feel fired up enough to somehow try and convince The National to also consider having some stopovers in Asia as well. Message? Check. Email? Done. Petition? Hmm. Who is with me?

(pin-drop silence)
